Gynecology Q & A

What gynecology services are available?

Gynecology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the female reproductive system.

At Evergreen Women's Health, PC., our providers offers a variety of gynecology services, including:

  • Pelvic exams
  • Pap smears
  • Breast exams
  • Infertility evaluations
  • Family planning counseling

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing is also available to identify conditions like genital herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, as is endometrial ablation to address abnormal or heavy bleeding.

When should I schedule a gynecology consultation?

For adult women, our providers recommends scheduling a routine wellness exam once a year, starting around age 21 or when you become sexually active. Younger patients can also schedule a gynecology visit with your provider for any other issues as they arise.

You should also set up an evaluation if you have symptoms that may relate to an underlying health condition that affects your reproductive symptoms, such as:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding and missed periods
  • Pain during sex
  • Urinary incontinence

Your provider can also address symptoms like hot flashes, anxiety, and night sweats that may result from menopause, the time when your periods stop for good. Bioidentical and conventional hormone therapy help manage symptoms. Noninvasive MonaLisa Touch® laser therapy can relieve vaginal discomfort without the use of hormones.

Dr. McNally also offers evaluation and diagnosis if you show signs of specific gynecological problems such as ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, chronic vulvar conditions, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

What can I expect during my gynecology visit?

During your gynecology visit, your provider takes time to review your personal and family medical history, your current symptoms, and your existing health. They may ask questions about your relationships, sexual activity, and pregnancy history to better understand your needs.

If appropriate, your provider can address issues like depression and anxiety that affect your emotional and mental health.

You can also expect services like:

Pelvic exam

Your provider performs a pelvic exam to evaluate the health and function of your reproductive organs and identify any abnormalities.

Cancer screening

As part of your pelvic exam, your provider can do a Pap smear, a preventive screening that involves swabbing your cervix to collect cells. She sends the sample to a medical lab for testing to identify abnormal cells that may be precancerous.

Your provider may also offer manual breast exams to identify lumps or other signs of cancer and can refer you for a mammogram when appropriate.

Birth control counseling and family planning

Your provider can help you choose the right birth control method to prevent unplanned pregnancies. If you choose a type of birth control that requires a prescription or in-office placement, she can take care of that for you. Evergreen Integrative Gynecology offers a wide variety of options, including intrauterine devices (IUDs) and the hormonal implant Nexplanon®.
